It was here, at Swauk Creek, that gold was first discovered back in Gold mining camps were established all over Kittitas County after the first find. Among these mining camps was the unincorporated community of Liberty, which went on to become one of the most productive sites in the area. Despite early success, Kittitas County prospectors were regularly disappointed. The area's gold production proved lower than that of other counties in Washington State.
However, when gold was found there, it tended to be in the form of large nuggets. This made it more valuable than the placer gold of neighboring regions. Nuggets are still recovered from Kittitas County rivers on occasion, so determined prospectors can expect to be rewarded for their patience.
Because of this mine, Chelan County is the largest producer of gold in all of Washington State. In the late s, additional lode mines sprung up throughout the county. This included one in Blewett, which is accessible today despite the town having long ago been abandoned.
Even a novice prospector has a pretty good chance of finding placer gold in the rivers of Chelan County. The Wenatchee River in particular is a popular spot for panning. The Chelan County stretch of the Columbia River is also worth checking out. Skagit County's primary producer of gold is the river with which it shares its name.
The same can be said for the beaches near Anacortes and anywhere around the Puget Sound for that matter. There are many good areas to prospect in Snohomish County. Most of the larger rivers in this county will carry some fine gold in the gravel bars and down in the crevices of bedrock. One good location is on the Sauk River near the town of Darrington. Check out the drainages that come off of Gold Mountain to the east of town.
Placers can also be found on Deer Creek northwest of Darrington, and many other small creeks in this area. Historically, small placer mining operations have occurred all throughout the river, with good amounts of gold recovered. A few noteworthy areas include the stretch or the South Fork Stillaguamish River near Granite Falls and upstream around Gold Basin, although gold can likely be found anywhere from its headwaters down to where it enters the Puget Sound.
There has been a fair amount of placer mining done on this river over the years, and it has produced some good coarse gold as well as fines. A productive stretch for gold prospecting can be found from Spada Lake down to its confluence with the Skykomish River. There has been a sizable amount of placer mining done on the Skykomish River. Gold can be found throughout the river system, but one area that is known to be especially productive is around the town of Sultan. Many old workings can be found in this stretch of the river.
It is always a good idea to try to locate areas where the old timer mined. There are very many other mines in the Kaniksu National Forest. Out of Evans 1. This mine produced copper with minor gold and silver production. The Evans Placer camp in on the west bank of reservoir just north of town.
The Evans Placer was a lease of 5 miles along the east shore which produced abundant placer gold form rich deposits.
Crispin Mine. The Orient district, in the far northwest corner of the county, between Latitude 48 degrees 50 minutes and 48 degrees 56 minutes N and Longitude degrees and 5 minutes and degrees and 10 minutes W formed in formed in with 86 mines currently listed in T39 and 40 N R36 and 37 E. The total production of the Orient district is listed at 45, ounces.
Faith, Hope and Charity Mine. Snohomish County contains lode mines and 42 placer mines. Most of the gold came from the Monte Cristo and Silverton Districts. In section 13, is the Cow Moose Placer, which was very productive as well. The Queen Anne Mine was a base metal mine that produced a by product of gold.
These mines produced lode gold and copper. This mine was 4 claims that produced lode gold. On the north side of the mountain, in section 32, is the Sloman Mine, which produced lode gold, copper and silver. The Blue Bird Mine was a base metals and silver mine that produced a by product of gold.
In the area 7 miles from Bedel and 7 miles from Barlow Pass, is the Perm Mine, which produced lead, silver and zinc with a by product of gold.
West of Index by. This was a real productive mine. The Black Hawk was a lode mine that comprised 4 claims. The Monte Cristo district, is in the south central part of the county which with the Index, Silverton, Silver Creek and Sultan districts make a territory 20 miles long and 10 miles wide extending from the center of the county to the King County Line that produces considerable amounts of gold.
This mine was a lode gold mine consisting of 3 claims. This mine was a lode gold, silver and lead mine. There are many mines in the area of the Michigan Mine. In section 22, 1 mile east of Monte Cristo, is the Keystone Mine, which produced lode gold, copper, lead and silver.
