With heavy hearts, Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine is sad to inform our patients that Dr. Libby Whitaker passed away on February 8, with her family at her side after her long, arduous battle with cancer.
Libby was our warrior, our partner, our friend and our hero. Libby touched many people through her work, her volunteering, and her friendships. She loved all her patients dearly and caring for them was one of her greatest joys. We will all miss Libby's beautiful smile, quick wit, loving nature and her fierce childhood advocacy. As we respect her family and their privacy at this difficult time, we ask you to remember them in your prayers.
Bacteria gets killed each time you take an antibiotic, but sometimes there are bacteria causing infections that happen to be resistant to prescribed antibiotics or they become resistant during the treatment process. A common misconception is that a person's body becomes resistant to specific medicines but in reality it's the bacteria, not the person that becomes resistant to the medications. When antibiotics are taken improperly, the odds of developing medicine-resistant bacteria are significantly increased, which is why it's important to only take antibiotics when absolutely necessary.
Antibiotics cannot kill viruses or help your child feel better. Viruses cause: Colds and flu, runny noses, most coughs and bronchitis, and most sore throats. Antibiotics are needed depending on the specific diagnosis in question. For example, there are several types of ear infections that require antibiotics but there some types do not. Common viral infections, such as coughs and colds, can sometimes become complicated and a bacterial infection can develop.
However, treating viral infections with antibiotics in order to prevent bacterial infections is not recommended because of the risk of causing bacterial resistance.
