He also developed a strong interest in orientalist subjects, spurred by the five-month trip to Morocco and southern Spain he took in He stressed the creative and imaginative elements of painting and opposed the academy for its rote learning and the bourgeoisie for its overly materialistic interests. But ultimately he developed a personal conception of beauty that could only be expressed in an individualized manner.
Recent studies have revised the long-standing interpretation of Delacroix as a radical, anticlassical, misunderstood, and unsupported genius. He greatly admired antiquity and the classical authors but insisted on avoiding the narrow or didactic view of them offered by the academies. He may not have emulated classical statuary as sources for his figures, but he did often represent heroic nude figures. For all his insistence on invention, Delacroix retained some sense of documentary reconstruction, for he made numerous studies of costumes and weapons and did other kinds of research before tackling certain subjects.

It took me nearly a year to read this book. I made the error of buying a copy of the original first edition which made the text difficult to read.
Despite skimming over some sections of overly indulgent verses I did enjoy the read. Some great characters stride across the pages. Melodramatic in places and with a slightly annoying ending it nevertheless is a good read.
Particularly if you are familiar with the wild setting of Shetland and Orkney where it is set. Scott wrote the book whilst travell It took me nearly a year to read this book.
Scott wrote the book whilst travelling around these islands on an inspection duty with the lighthouse Stephensons. He certainly accurately captures the wild and superstitious nature of these beautiful islands. No wonder she lost her equipoise with the plot twist that Scott had just come up with. I thoroughly enjoyed this farrago of nonsense. It's totally unlike any other Scott I've read, and I'd recommend it for anyone with sufficient ability to suspend disbelief.
The Pirate by Walter Scott Scott is a son of the Enlightenment where he reveals the false pretensions of people 'working' with 'supernatural', 'magical' or 'mystic' powers as in The Pirate. A good story but to long and to many digressions for the common reader of today.

Despite slow and winding parts, The Pirate remains a cracking read, especially for those with an interest in Shetland! Apr 29, Michele rated it it was amazing. In his novels Scott arranged the plots and characters so the reader enters into the lives of both great and ordinary people caught up in violent, dramatic changes in history. Scott's work shows the influence of the 18th century enlightenment. He believed every human was basically decent regardless of class, religion, politics, or ancestry. Tolerance is a major theme in his historical works. The Waverley Novels express his belief in the need for social progress that does not reject the traditions of the past.
He was the first novelist to portray peasant characters sympathetically and realistically, and was equally just to merchants, soldiers, and even kings. Central themes of many of Scott's novels are about conflicts between opposing cultures. Ivanhoe is about war between Normans and Saxons. The Talisman is about conflict between Christians and Muslims. His novels about Scottish history deal with clashes between the new English culture and the old Scottish.
Scott's amiability, generosity, and modesty made him popular with his contemporaries. He was also famous for entertaining on a grand scale at his Scottish estate, Abbotsford.
