Jackson and O'Neal followed, throwing punches. The referees ended the game because of the fight, declaring the Pacers, ahead by , the victors. On Saturday, a fight broke out between football players from South Carolina and Clemson during their game.
David C. Gorcyca, the Oakland County Mich. Billy Hunter, executive director of the N. No one can condone the level of incitement and violence we all witnessed. Clearly, there's a need to institute measures and safeguards to improve the safety of players and fans alike, to ensure that an incident like this never occurs again.
Tom Wilson, the chief executive of Palace Sports and Entertainment, said nine fans were treated for injuries at the arena on Friday night. Chris Allman, a spokesman for Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital, said four men and one woman were treated for minor injuries and released. Granted they should have had better security to insure that the fans that threw things were immediately arrested and removed from the arena, but players absolutely must not wade into the stands and begin physically assaulting fans no matter how belligerant.
These suspensions and fines signify that the reputation of the entire league is at stake. There is plenty of blame to go around but that display of assault was riddiculous. It is one thing to throw a punch in anger it is another thing to continue to assault people when fellow players and fans are trying to restrain you or to come flying out of no where and cold cock a fan.
Most of these guys make millions straight out of high school, with no college education. Perhaps they ought to pass this test: playing basketball while passing college courses, to see if they deserve the big bucks and fame. Other fans are planning to file lawsuits in the wake of the melee. One such fan, John Ackerman, recounted what he could of happened to him during the commotion, which allegedly included his being struck by a chair, on the CBS News Early Show. And I never thought I would be any part of that. As soon the melee unfolded, it was pretty easy to assume that the penalties would be huge.
Stephen Jackson spoke about the famed brawl on "The Rich Eisen Show" back in and gave a detailed look at everything that happened. The best part of his story revolved around what Artest said once the Pacers made it to the visiting locker room. His first question to me? Silver was tasked with gathering a significant amount of the footage that the league analyzed to make the rulings on the fines and suspensions. I think there is no magic formula for undoing the kind of damage that the brawl did.
Players lost games due to suspension over the "Malice at the Palace," and the NBA needed to go through every frame with a fine tooth comb to make sure nothing like this ever happened again.
